A combined team effort by the Mavericks Saturday afternoon led to a pair of wins against Nicholls State at Allan Saxe Field. UTA recorded a 4-1 victory in game one and followed with a 4-0 shutout win in game two.
The wins improved the Mavs to 22-12 overall and 9-2 in Southland action while the Colonels fell to 8-19 and 2-8.
In game one, true freshman Callie Collins led the Mavericks in the circle, pitching her 11th complete game of the season. Collins improved her record to 13-3 and allowed only one run on three hits while striking out 10. For the season, the Rusk, Texas native has recorded four games with 10 or more strikeouts.
After two scoreless innings by both teams, UTA got on board in the third when the Mavericks connected on a run on three hits. Junior Courtney Zink connected on a hit to the shortstop which scored pinch runner Kari Karr. Karr pinch ran for Alexis Cantu, who led off with a double to left center.
UT Arlington came right back in the following inning scoring a pair of runs and making it 3-0. Stephanie Gonzalez and Courtney Enocksen led off connecting on back-to-back hits and both came around to score. Gonzalez gave the Mavs their second run of the game when she scored on a throwing error by Nicholls State's pitcher. Enocksen crossed home plate after C. Zink ripped a single through the right side.
The Colonels only run of the game and series came in the fifth when Katie Holmes connected on a RBI double to right center.
Enocksen extended the Mavericks lead in the bottom half of the inning when she connected on her eighth double of the season scoring Ashley McCarroll.
C. Zink finished the game, going 2-for-3 with two RBI while Enocksen went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored.
Sophomore Teri Lyles picked up her fourth shutout of the season in game two. Lyles improved to 8-8 and recorded her 11th complete game. The sophomore allowed only three hits while striking out nine.
UTA wasted no time putting a run on the board as leadoff hitter Rebecca Collom connected on her 31st career home run to center field. Two batters later, Enocksen repeated Collom's performance but this time hitting it over the left field wall. The homer was the juniors fourth of the season.
It took the Mavs until the sixth inning to score again but it was Enocksen's bat that led to the pair of runs. The Kingwood, Texas native ripped a double to right center that scored Charne Office. Office led off with a single to second base.
Kersti Rowan put UTA up 4-0 when she singled up the middle scoring Enocksen from third.
Enocksen went 2-for-3 with a home run and double while driving in two RBI.
UT Arlington will be looking for the sweep tomorrow at noon when they wrap up the series against the Colonels at Allan Saxe Field.
