Final Stats
Denton, Texas - The UT Arlington softball team closed out day two of the North Texas Classic with a nine inning 4-3 win against Wichita State and a 6-1 loss to UTEP Saturday in Denton, Texas. The Mavs are 2-2 in the tournament and 13-9 overall.
Wichita State 3, UT Arlington 4
It took UT Arlington nine innings of softball but the Mavericks were able to pull out a 4-3 win against Wichita State Saturday. UTA is now 3-0 against the Shockers this season.
Senior Rebecca Collom helped the Mavericks to the 4-3 win after she blasted a two-run homer in the ninth inning. Collom finished the game going 2-for-3 with two RBI and two walks. It was the seniors fifth homer of the season and 29th of her career.
Sophomore hurler Teri Lyles (5-6) picked up the win and pitched her seventh complete game of the season. Lyles allowed three runs on eight hits while recording a season-high and career-high 12 strikeouts.
The Shockers got on board first in the top of the fourth with a home run but UT Arlington tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth following a solo home run by Erica LeFlore.
Wichita State drove in a run in the seventh to lead 2-1 but again the Mavericks weren't going out without a fight as they plated a solo run in the bottom half of the inning, sending the game into extra innings.
After a scoreless eighth and the international rule in effect, the Shockers connected on a hit and scored a run, to lead 3-2. Collom took care of the rest in the bottom half of the inning with her offensive power.
LeFlore went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a home run while Taylor Zink also recorded a multi-hit game, going 3-for-4.
UTEP 6, UT Arlington 1
UT Arlington closed out day two of the North Texas Classic with a 6-1 loss to UTEP Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Callie Collins (6-2) took the loss on the mound, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out four. Alexis Cantu came in relief to pitch the final two innings. Cantu allowed three runs on four hits.
The Mavericks lone run came off the bat of shortstop Courtney Enocksen who recorded her first home run of the season and third of her career. The junior finished the game going 1-for-2 and was one of four Mavs to connect on a hit.
UTEP plated solo runs in the second and third innings and three runs in fifth.
The Mavericks will play their final game at the North Texas Classic tomorrow against Wichita State. First pitch is set for 12:30 p.m.
