Final Stats
Nacogdoches, Texas - A three-run sixth inning by Stephen F. Austin proved too much for the Mavericks as they dropped a 5-2 decision in the final game of the series on Sunday at the SFA Softball Complex.
The setback dropped the Mavericks to 29-16 overall and 16-5 in Southland action.
Junior transfer Kersti Rowan finished the game going 2-for-4. She was the only Maverick to record a multi-hit performance.
True freshman Callie Collins fell to 17-6 on the season after pitching five innings. Collins allowed five runs on three hits while striking out four and walking four.
Sophomore Teri Lyles came in the sixth inning where she allowed zero runs on two hits.
In the third inning, the Ladyjacks took advantage of a Maverick throwing error which scored SFA's first run of the game and Elizabeth Arana made it 2-0 after she scored Nicole Wooten on a sacrifice fly ball to right field.
The Mavericks offense came out swinging in the fifth and tied the game at 2-2. With one out, Courtney Zink singled to right field and advanced to second on a Rowan base hit through the right side. Junior Charne Office connected on a single scoring Zink. Rebecca Collom tied the game with a sacrifice fly ball to right field which scored Rowan.
SFA offense exploded in the sixth as they plated three runs on five hits. In UTA's final at bat, SFA pitcher Monika Covington (5-16) was able to get the Mavericks three up and three down. Covington finished the game, allowing only two runs on four hits and striking out five.
Up next for the Mavericks is a non-conference match up against No. 3 Texas on Tuesday, April 19 in Austin, Texas. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
