Final Stats
Austin, Texas - The UT Arlington softball team dropped an 8-0 six inning loss to No. 5 Texas Tuesday evening at McCombs Field in Austin, Texas. The loss dropped the Mavericks to 29-17 overall while the Longhorns improved to 38-4.
Head coach Debbie Hedrick opened the game by switching the defense and moved catcher Erica LeFlore to third base and moved freshman Rachel Forshaw behind the plate.
True freshman Callie Collins (17-7) got the start against the Longhorns and quickly found herself struggling against the top team in the Big 12. Collins took the loss for the Mavericks, allowing six runs on four hits in 0.1 innings of work. The freshman was also called for three illegal pitches in the loss.
The Longhorns offense jumped out to a 6-0 advantage following three home runs in the first.
Brejae Washington connected on a home run after ripping a shot over the center field wall. Catcher Amy Hooks added to the lead with a two-run homer over the left-center field wall and with two runners on and one out in the inning Courtney Craig recorded a three-run homer to left field.
Now leading 6-0 and only one out, sophomore Teri Lyles was called to finish up the inning. Lyles was able to get the next two batters to fly and ground out.
Freshman Stephanie Gonzalez connected on the Mavericks first hit of the game with a bunt single and advanced to second with a stolen base in the second inning.
In the third, Craig belted her second home run of the game to left field for a 7-0 advantage.
With two outs in the fifth, junior Charne Office almost made it a 7-2 game after sending the Longhorns left fielder to the warning tracks.
The game ended in the bottom of the sixth when Nadia Taylor singled to right field scoring the Longhorns eighth run to end the game.
Lyles finished the game pitching 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and struck out four.
Junior transfer Kersti Rowan was the only other Maverick to connect on a hit in the game.
Texas pitcher Blaire Luna (22-2) recorded the victory, allowing zero runs on two hits and struck out 10.
Following tonight's game, the Mavericks return to Allan Saxe Field to face Sam Houston State in a three game series. The series begins with a doubleheader schedule for Friday and ends with a single game Saturday.
Game times are set for 4, 6 and 1 p.m.
