Final Stats
Arlington, Texas - The UT Arlington softball team suffered a pair of loss in day one of their doubleheader against Sam Houston State on Friday at Allan Saxe Field. The Mavericks opened with a 2-0 setback and lost game two by a 2-1 decision.
The losses dropped the Mavericks to 29-19 overall and 16-7 in Southland action. The Bearkats improved to 19-26 overall and 11-11 in league place.
Sam Houston State 2, UT Arlington 0
Head coach Debbie Hedrick switched her pitching rotation in game one, giving sophomore Teri Lyles the start. Lyles took the loss in the circle, falling to 11-10 on the season. She surrendered two runs on three hits and struck out five in a complete game.
After a scoreless two innings, Sam Houston State got on board in the third when Hailey Wiginton hit a home run over the right field wall for a 1-0 advantage.
Sam Houston State added their second run of the game in the fourth following a fielding error by Courtney Zink which scored Alex Survant from third.
With two outs in the fourth, Rebecca Collom singled to right field and Courtney Enocksen followed with another single to the right side. Erica LeFlore was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for the Mavericks. Lyles hit a hard ground ball at Sam Houston State's pitcher which slapped off her glove but she quickly recovered and threw out LeFlore running to second to end the inning.
The Mavericks couldn't get their offense to connect on a run in the final three innings. UTA scattered only five hits and left five runners stranded.
At the plate, Collom and Enocksen connected on a pair of hits in the loss.

Senior Rebecca Collom connected on her 35th career home run and 11th of the season in game two but it wasn't enough to hold off Sam Houston State. The Bearkats pulled out a 2-1 victory against the Mavs.
Sam Houston State jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the first following a Kim Damian RBI-single to second.
After a scoreless second by both teams, Collom put the Mavericks back in the game when she tied it at 1-1 in the third with a solo shot to left field.
UTA had plenty of opportunities to score but couldn't come up with a clutch hit. The Mavericks had a perfect opportunity to plate some runs in the fifth with the bases loaded but pinch hitter Erica LeFlore was unable to deliver. The Mavericks left nine runners stranded in the setback.
Erin Burford gave the Bearkats a 2-1 lead in the seventh with a solo home run to left field.
True freshman Callie Collins took the loss in the circle falling to 17-8 on the year. Collins gave up two runs on eight hits while striking out nine.
For the Bearkats, Cecilia Castillo recorded the win and improved her record to 1-3. Tomi Garrison pitched the final inning and picked up her third save of the season.
Collom finished the game 1-for-2 with a home run and a pair of walks.
The Mavericks will close out the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. -
