Final Stats
Arlington, Texas - After dropping a pair of games in day one to Sam Houston State, the UT Arlington softball team came out strong on Saturday and recorded a 3-2 victory at Allan Saxe Field. The win improved the Mavericks to 30-19 overall and 17-7 in Southland action.
Sophomore Teri Lyles recorded the win in the circle, improving her overall record to 12-10. Lyles gave up two runs on six hits while striking out three in a complete game.
Freshman Stephanie Gonzalez led the Mavericks offensively, going 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Gonzalez connected on a clutch one-out base hit in the fourth which tied the game at 2-2.
Sam Houston State quickly jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the first inning when Hailey Wiginton led off with a home run to right field. The Bearkats added another run in the third following an RBI-single to center field by Alex Survant, making it 2-0.
Senior Rebecca Collom got the Mavericks bats going in the fourth when she led off with a stand up double to the right field wall. It was the senior's 14th double of the season. Junior Courtney Enocksen was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second for freshman Gonzalez. The freshman poked a two-RBI single up the middle and tied the game at 2-2.
With two outs in the sixth, freshman Taylor Zink put the Mavericks on top 3-2 with an RBI-single through the right side scoring pinch runner Ashley McCarroll from second.
Lyles and the Maverick defense held off the Bearkats in the final inning and avoided the sweep.
Sam Houston State pitcher Tomi Garrison took the loss, falling to 14-15 in the circle. Garrison surrendered three runs on seven hits in six innings of work.
The Mavericks will now hit the road for a three-game series at McNeese State in Lake Charles, LA. UTA is schedule to play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 30 and a single game on Sunday. Game times are set for 1, 3 and 12 p.m.
