Final Stats
Arlington, Texas - The UT Arlington softball team went the distance with non-conference opponent North Texas Wednesday evening but fell short of the win, falling 1-0 at Allan Saxe Field. The setback dropped the Mavericks to 26-13 overall while the Mean Green improved to 17-20 on the season.
Prior to the start of the game, both teams rallied together in support for Texas Women's University student-athlete Abby Burns who was diagnosed with leukemia on January 11. Burns threw out the first pitch and both teams sported orange t-shirts to support Orange for the Cure.
After six scoreless innings of softball, the Mean Green came through in the seventh loading the bases and scoring a run on a fielder's choice by Monica Hirsch. UTA got out of the inning but the damage was done as the Mavericks failed to produce a run in their final at bat.
True freshman Callie Collins took the loss for the Mavericks in the circle, falling to 15-4 on the year. Collins pitched her 14th complete game, allowing only one run on two hits while striking out seven.
Mean Green's pitcher Brittany Simmons picked up the win, improving her record to 9-9. Simmons allowed zero runs on five hits.
As a team, the Mavericks connected on five hits with junior Kersti Rowan accounting for three. Rowan finished the game a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases. Junior Courtney Enocksen also recorded a hit as she connected on a standout up double to left center in the sixth inning.
UT Arlington will remain at home for a weekend series against Northwestern State beginning with a double-header on Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m. The Mavericks close out the series against the Lady Demons Sunday at 1 p.m.
