Final Stats
Arlington, Texas - After securing a 3-0 game one victory against Northwestern State, UT Arlington was unable to get its offense going in game two, falling 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Allan Saxe Field. The Mavericks ended the day with a 27-14 overall record and a 14-3 league mark.
The highlight of the double-header came in the third inning of game one when junior Charne Office ripped a line shot over the left field wall for a three-run homer. The long ball was the junior's fourth of the season.
The three runs in game one was all the Mavs needed for the win as their nationally-ranked defense and pitcher Callie Collins took care of the rest.
Northwestern State made it interesting in their final at bat loading the bases but UTA's 17th nationally-ranked defense held them scoreless.
Collins recorded her fourth shutout of the season in game one where she pitched a complete game, allowing zero runs on five hits while striking out eight. The true freshman registered a strikeout in all but two innings and improved her record to 16-4.
Besides Office, Erica LeFlore and Kersti Rowan were the only Mavericks to connect on a hit.
Following a 30 minute intermission, UT Arlington moved to game two where they struggled to get any offense going against a tough Northwestern State pitcher.
Rowan was the lone Maverick to connect on a multi-hit performance, finishing 2-for-3. As a team, UTA scattered four hits with Rebecca Collom and Courtney Enocksen accounting for the other two.
Northwestern State found themselves in a perfect position to score in the third with one out and a runner at third. The Lady Demon's head coach called for a suicide squeeze which proved successful, giving NWST 1-0 advantage.
The Lady Demons added another run in the sixth when two costly fielding errors by the Mavericks led to a run. Northwestern State made it 3-0 in the seventh following another suicide squeeze play.
Sophomore hurler Teri Lyles took the loss, falling to 10-9 on the season. Lyles allowed three runs on six hits while striking out five.
The Mavericks close out their three-game series against the Lady Demons tomorrow at Allan Saxe Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
