Waco, Texas - The UT Arlington softball team started its 2012 season with two victories, defeating the Arkansas Razorbacks and the Belmont Bruins at the Getterman Classic on Friday.
The Mavericks began their day with a win against the University of Arkansas. Both teams struggled from the plate, with each picking up only two hits.
Due to walks and errors UTA, was able to score four runs in the fourth inning to grab the lead and eventually a 4-1 win. Junior pitcher Teri Lyles worked around seven walks to earn the Mavericks' first victory.
In the next game, the Mavericks jumped out to an early lead against Belmont by driving two runs to the plate in the first inning. The Bruins came back in the third with three runs to take the lead.
UTA tied it up in the fourth and the Mavericks continued scoring by pushing across three runs in each the fifth and the sixth innings. The Mavericks would go on for a 9-4 win over the Bruins.
Right fielder Charne Office went 3-for-4 with four RBI and one run for UTA scored against Belmont. Sophomore pitcher Callie Collins went the distance, striking out three and allowing just one earned run in picking up her first win.
The Mavericks (2-0) are back in action Saturday to take on Wichita State at noon and Iowa at 3 p.m. in the Getterman Classic.
