SB: Mavs split Day 1 of Texas Shootout

SAN MARCOS, Texas-- The Mavericks split their first day of the Texas Shootout with a win over Sam Houston State and a loss to No. 25 Baylor.

UT Arlington 2, Sam Houston State 1

UT Arlington defeated Sam Houston State 2-1. The Mavericks improved to 5-1 on the season and Teri Lyles picked up her fourth win.

"When they got a run on us we knew it was going to be a long game," UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said. "I was confident that we were going to put the bat on the ball. Luckily for us Meagan had a big at bat that ended up winning us the game."

The Bearkats jumped to an early 1-0 lead after the first inning. Meagan Michele homered in the second inning to drive in two runs.

Rebecca Stokes advanced to third on a throwing error by the shortstop and Nina Villanueva grabbed a sacrifice bunt to advance Stokes to third with one out. Jolene Schaefer and Lyles grounded out and the Mavs were unable to score.

Rebecca Stokes grounded out to first for a second out, advancing Zink to third, before the Mavs reached three outs.

The Bearkats pushed a runner to third with one out in the bottom of the fourth, but picked up two more outs before scoring again.

Nina Villanueva had two catches in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure the win for the Mavericks.

UT Arlington is back on the field at 1:30 p.m. as they face Baylor University.

Baylor 3, UT Arlington 0

UT Arlington picked up its second loss Friday afternoon in a 3-0 loss to the Lady Bears.

The Mavericks fall to 5-2 on the season, while Baylor picks up its 13th win of the season (13-2).

Baylor picked up its first run of the game on a steal and throwing error to take the 1-0 lead in the first inning.

Baylor got a runner on in the top of the fourth, but three consecutive outs for the Bears ends the half inning. The Mavericks came up with a quick three up, three down to head into the fifth inning.

Junior Callie Collins walked her first batter in the top of the fifth with two outs to put a runner on base for the Lady Bears.

Lyles singles to first for the Mavericks second hit of the game, but Baylor retired the side before a run could cross the plate.

Sarah Smith hit a double left field and Linsey Hays grounded out to advance Smith to third with two outs. Collins would walk the next batter before Robin Landrith would fly-out to right center.

Baylor grabbed two hits and two runs in the top of the seventh before Collins would pick up another strikeout.

The Mavericks ended the game with a quick three outs in the bottom of the seventh.

Lyles completed the day with one win to improve to a 4-0 record. while Callie Collins picked up a save and a loss dropper her to 1-2 on the season.
