LUBBOCK, Texas - The Mavericks improved to 12-8 on the season after a 6-5 win over Troy (11-14) on their final day at the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic hosted by Texas Tech.

"The bats came around this weekend," UT Arlington caoch Kristie Fox said. "For the most part our pitching and defense have been solid and all we were missing was having quality at bats with runners in scoring position."

Teri Lyles moved to 11-2 with the win after she came in for Callie Collins in relief against Troy. Rachel Forshaw and Rebecca Stokes both had their first home runs of the season in the contest.

Lyles, WAC Pitcher of the Week for the second consecutive week, notched the first hit of the game for the Mavs with a leadoff single in the top of the second inning. On the next pitch, Forshaw tagged the ball over the left field fence to give UTA a 2-0 lead.

Stokes followed suit with a homer to left to put the Mavs up 3-0. After a Holly Murphree walk, Taylor Zink tapped a two-out RBI double into left center field to extend the UTA lead.

After a leadoff Troy double and a stolen base, a nice 5-3-2 double play perserved the shutout for the Mavs in the bottom of the second. The Trojans threatened again in the bottom of the third after a walk and a throwing error advanced the runner all the way to third. A stolen base and another walk loaded the bases for Troy with two-outs.

Troy would score two on a UTA throwing error to close the gap at 4-2. The Trojans would then tie it up with another Maverick error, making all four runs unearned.

A double to deep center after a Trojan single would break the tie in the bottom of the fifth inning and Lyles would enter the game for Collins. Back-to-back singles from Jolene Schaefer and Stokes would put the tying run in scoring position in the top of the sixth. Pinch hitter Lauren Siple smacked a double off the left field wall to tie the game at 5-5.

Kallan Thompson's one-out bunt single would load the bases before Zink singled through the left side to give UTA a 6-5 lead. A 6-3-5 double play would end the game and give the Mavs the one-run win.

The Mavs will travel to San Diego, Calif. to compete in the San Diego Classic II March 14-17. The tournament will be hosted by San Diego State. UTA will face Miami, UNLV, Bryant, Seton Hall and Buffalo.
