LUBBOCK, Texas - The Mavs moved to 9-8 on the season after a 3-2 win over Troy and a 3-1 loss to Indiana-Purdue University at Fort Wayne (IPFW) at the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic hosted by Texas Tech.

"I think throughout the day you see glimpses of what this team is capable of," UTA head coach Kristie Fox said. "We just need to keep working on putting it all together."

Game 1 Recap

Britnea Barilli had two of the four hits for the Mavs in the contest. Rachel Forshaw and Kallan Thompson each notched one of their own. Starting pitcher Teri Lyles moved to 8-2 with the victory.

Barilli gave the Mavs the first hit of the game in the top of the first inning. The Trojans broke open the tie ballgame in the bottom of the third when Ebony Wright hit an inside the park home run down the left field line. Troy extended their lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth after two bunts and a passed ball scored the leadoff single.

The Mavs kept the game alive with two straight walks in the top of the seventh. Rebecca Stokes advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt for the first out of the inning. Forshaw knocked in a two-run double to tie the game but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple.

In the top of the eighth, Lauren Ramsey started on second base according to international tiebreaker rules and Thompson bunted her safely over to third. A Taylor Zink walk loaded the bases for UTA with no outs. Barilli notched her second hit of the game to left to give the Mavs the 3-2 lead and win.

Game 2 Recap

Barilli had another two hits against IPFW and Stokes contributed two as well with the only RBI for the Mavs. Starting pitcher Callie Collins moves to 1-6 with the loss.

Once again, Barilli got the first hit for the Mavs in the first inning of the game. Forshaw continued where she left off in game one of the day with a single in the top of the second. But IPFW took an early lead after Dani Pugh knocked a two-run home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the second.

Back-to-back one out singles from Lyles and Jolene Schaefer put a runner in scoring position in the top of the fourth. Stokes then loaded the bases after a single to shortstop but UTA would not bring in a run.

IPFW extended their lead to 3-0 after a single to center brought in the runner at second. Meagan Michele answered back with a leadoff single in the top of the sixth inning. Schaefer walked just before Stokes drove in Michele to put the Mavs on the board but IPFW would close out the game, 3-1.

"Tomorrow I want to see us execute and battle to win each inning," Fox said. "We can't sit back and wait for the comeback."

UT Arlington will return to action at the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic against IPFW at Plains Capital Park at noon tomorrow.
