SB: Mavs swept at NMSU

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico - The UT Arlington Mavericks were swept for the second weekend in a row as they dropped a doubleheader at New Mexico State.

"I think in both games we out-hit New Mexico State," UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said. "That's a positive. We need to take the positives and run with them.

"The team kept fighting and that's all I can ask for."

Taylor Zink started the game with a single to short-center and scored from second on a Rachel Forshaw single to give the Mavericks the first run of the game and the 1-0 lead.

Teri Lyles walked her first batter. With the basses loaded Tehani Kaaihue singled to second and NMSU scored to tie the game, 1-1, before the end of the first inning.

Emma Adams homered with one out in the bottom of the second to give the Aggies a 2-1 lead.

Nina Villanueva singled to score Lyles to tie the game 2-2. The Mavericks had a chance to add to the lead, but left two runners stranded in the sixth.

The Aggies get two runners on in the bottom of the seventh, but Lyles' pitching and tough defense were able to get the Mavs out of the inning.

Amber Olive tripled to center field to lead off the bottom of the 12th inning. Kristi Covarrubia drove in Olive to give the Aggies a 3-2 win over the Mavericks.

Lyles dropped to 15-7 on the season after pitching a complete game.

New Mexico State 6, UT Arlington 5 (8 innings)

New Mexico State started scoring early in the third game of the series. Teresa Conrad doubled to left-center scoring two runs in the first inning. The Aggies picked up another run in the second innings to take a 3-0 lead over the Mavericks.

Taylor Zink scored for the Mavs, as Villanueva doubled to right-center with one out in the top of the third. Villanueva crossed home on a hit by Lyles, who later scored when Meagan Michele had an infield singled with two outs. The Mavericks would end the top of the third tied 3-3.

The Aggies put a run on the board in the bottom of the fifth on a single down the leftfield line to lead 4-3.

NMSU put in Alex Newman to relieve Celisha Walker in the top of the sixth. With Michele is scoring position, Kallan Thompson singled to tie the game 4-4.

Villanueva doubled in the top of the seventh, but UTA left her stranded. NMSU answered back by putting a runner on, but was unable to score and the game went into extra innings.

Thompson singled to score Michele to push the Mavericks ahead 5-4 in eighth.

The Aggies answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning on Teresa Conrad's double to give NMSU a 6-5 win in eight innings.

The Mavericks dropped to 17-19 on the season and 2-7 in conference.
