ST. GEORGE, Utah - UT Arlington softball rode a five-run second inning to defeat Utah Valley 6-0 on Sunday at the Canyons Softball Complex. The victory secured a winning record for the Mavericks (3-2) in the Red Desert Classic.

"I think that the team lived up to the expectations this weekend," UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said. "Our pitchers did a really good job and offensively we still have some work to do. It was a good weekend to shake off the cobwebs. We are excited to get back home and show our hometown fans what we can do."

Kacey Everett and Britnea Barilli opened the scoring with a pair of RBI hits in the second. Everett doubled to the left-center field wall to score Rebecca Stokes, and Barilli followed with a single to left to score Everett.

Nina Villanueva capped the scoring two batters later with two outs by sending a line drive over the wall for a three-run homer to give UTA a 5-0 lead.

The Mavericks crossed the plate again four innings later. Jolene Schaefer doubled to the wall to lead off the sixth, Schaefer was able to advance to third and Everett added her second RBI of the contest with a liner to right field.

Shannon Carrico pitched six innings of shutout ball in her third start, improving to 2-0 this season. The sophomore struck out four, gave up five hits and walked two.

Brittany May appeared in her second game of the tournament, working around a walk to clinch the finale with a strikeout.

UT Arlington returns home on Friday for its home opener in the UTA Maverick Invitational at Allan Saxe Field. Action gets underway for the Mavericks at 1 p.m. vs. South Dakota State.
