Final Stats

LUBBOCK, Texas - UT Arlington softball dropped its opening game of the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic to Texas Tech, 8-1, Thursday night at Rocky Johnson Field.

The Mavericks fall to 11-9 overall, including 0-2 against Texas Tech on the season. UTA pitcher Callie Collins moved to 6-5 on the season giving up seven hits and striking out five Red Raiders.

"I think against any team you have to be ready from the first pitch and we have been too inconsistent with that," UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said. "We gave away runs on routine plays and mental errors.

"This team has done a good job learning and moving on quickly. I expect a different team to show up tomorrow."

Texas Tech scored in the bottom of the first with one out on a wild pitch. The Red Raiders scored in the fourth on a throwing error to extend their lead to 2-0.

The Mavericks had their chances. Tech's Cara Cluster walked two batters with two outs in the third, but UTA was unable to capitalize. The Mavericks didn't get a hit until freshman Kacey Everett laced a single in the fifth. Lauren Ramsey pitch ran for Everett and scored on Shelbi Sikes' hit to put the Mavericks on the board.

Texas Tech pushed two runs across the plate on a pair of triples in the fifth. The Raiders also scored on a squeeze to take a four-run lead.

Brittany May replaced Collins in the circle in the sixth. May gave up a one run before Tech's Kristi Belshe hit a solo home run over the left field wall with two outs.

The Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic continues Friday for the Mavericks against New Mexico State at 10 a.m. and Northern Arizona at 3 p.m. Saturday's game against Abilene Christian is noon. UTA concludes the weekend in Lubbock against New Mexico State on Sunday at 10 a.m.
