SB: Mavs sweep Day 2 in Lubbock

LUBBOCK, Texas - UT Arlington swept Day 2 of the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic with wins over New Mexico State and Northern Colorado.

UT Arlington 5, New Mexico State 3
Sophomore Shannon Carrico improved to 5-2 on the season, giving up one earned run on six hits.

With two outs in the bottom of the first inning, sophomore Britnea Barilli homered over the left-center-wall for her second career home run. The Aggies were quick to respond with a run off a throwing error to tie the game 1-1.

In the second inning, Nina Villanueva doubled to right center to move Rebecca Stokes to third. Jasmine Tanksley walked to load the bases with Kacey Everett at the plate. Everett hit her first-career grand slam to extend the Mavericks' lead 5-1.

In the fifth, New Mexico State scored two runs to narrow the deficit.

Callie Collins replaced Carrico in the top of the sixth inning. Collins didn't allow a hit in two innings pitched.

"We were waiting for good pitches and when they came we were swinging at them," UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said. "We were able to make good thigns happen. It was really nice to have our starting pitcher work out a combo for starts and closes."

UT Arlington 8, Northern Colorado 3

Collins started in the circle for the Mavericks and improved to 7-5 on the season.

Villanueva homered in the top of the second for her third of the season to put the Mavericks up 2-0 with no outs. Tanksley scored on a wild pitch later in the inning.

Northern Colorado answered back with a three-run home run in the second with no outs to tie the game 3-3.

Schaefer scored in the third off a Tanksley single to give the Mavericks a 4-3 lead. She would score again on a sacrifice fly from Everett in the fifth.

Sophomore Holly Murphree hit a three-run home run soaring over left field for her first career homer to extend the Mavericks' lead 8-3.

Carrico came in for Collins in the sixth inning giving up one hit in two innings and striking out two batters.

The Mavericks are back on the field Saturday as they face Abilene Christian at 1 p.m. at Rocky Johnson Field for UTA's lone game on Day 3.
