LUBBOCK, Texas - UT Arlington softball closed out the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic with a 4-3 loss Sunday against New Mexico State.

"We've walked off quite a few teams and today was our turn," UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said. "We only have two options and that is to quit or battle, and the foundation that the team is built on is that we never quit."

The Mavericks dropped to 13-11 overall and 2-3 in the tournament.

UT Arlington rallied from a 2-0 deficit with three runs in the top of the seventh. Rebecca Stokes hit her second home run of the season to put the Mavericks on the board. Pinch hitter Nina Villanueva followed later in the inning with a two-run homer off the scoreboard for the lead.

"Nina wasn't in the game, but she was in the dugout cheering on her teammates and I had a good feeling about putting her up to bat in that situation," Fox said.

The Aggies broke a scoreless tie with a two-run homer to center in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Sophomore pitcher Shannon Carrico replaced senior Callie Collins to start the seventh inning. In the bottom of the seventh with two outs and one runner on, NMSU homered to take the win.

Collins made her 13th start of the season and gave up two earned runs on two hits and no walks.

The Mavericks return to action Friday as they travel to California to compete in the San Diego Classic II. UTA opens the tournament with Long Beach State at 3 p.m. followed by San Diego State at 5:30 p.m.
