ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington was unable to complete a sweep of the weekend after falling to Sam Houston State 6-4 on Sunday at Allan Saxe Field to conclude the Maverick Invitational.
The Mavericks (8-2) attempted to extend its six-game winning streak with a late rally coming on two outs in the seventh. Britnea Barilli knocked a two-out double that glanced the left-field foul line, however, Barilli was thrown out a batter later as she attempted to come home on a single from Nina Villanueva to end the game.
"Sometimes you take chances and sometimes they come out your way and sometimes they don't," UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said. "Our mindset all the time is to be aggressive and that is going to win us a lot of ball games. It happens and we are not going to change the way we play the game. We talk about it all the time to control what you can control and play the way you play and that is what we did today."
Villanueva continued to lead the Mavericks' offense as she produced her fourth double of the tournament, finished 2-for-4 from the plate and knocked in four RBI. Barilli joined Meagan Michele to tie for a game-high three hits.
The Mavericks finished the tournament with a 4-1 record after picking up wins against Ohio State, Buffalo and two against Incarnate Word. UTA scored 52 runs in five games, including two run rules, and Fox said that she learned a lot about what her team can do this season.
"They have a lot of character, they learned a lot in the fall and this isn't the same team from last season," Fox said.
UTA is back in action as it hosts the second of back-to-back home tournaments starting on Friday in the Maverick Invitational.
Sam Houston State jumped out of the gate with a pair of runs in the top of the first. The Bearkats drew a walk with the bases loaded to score a run and followed it up with an infield single to lead 2-0 after the first.
The Bearkats continued with offense in the third to increase their advantage to five runs. SHSU picked up its first run on a double, its second on a sacrifice fly and then completed the frame with a home run.
UTA was able to briefly answer in the bottom half of the inning. Rebecca Stokes hit her second homer of the season to lead off the bottom of the third. Bryanna Datko produced her first-career hit two batters later and was pushed to third on a double by Barilli. Villanueva hit her sixth double of the tournament in the next at-bat to score both.
Villanueva helped bring the Mavs within a run in the fifth, as she was able to reach on a fielder's choice, scoring Datko on the play.
Sam Houston State extended the lead to 6-4 in the seventh with a lead-off homer.
