ARLINGTON, Texas - After a week full of schedule changes and cancellations due to bad weather, the UT Arlington Mavericks were able to walk away with two victories.
The men started the winning streak after defeating Sacramento State on Saturday 5-2. Johnathan Gonzalez and Carlos Arbiza continued their hot streak when they paired up in the No. 1 slot and defeated Sean Kolar and Roy Brandys 6-3. Stefan Williams and Sebastian Erimicioiu helped the Mavs win the double point when they defeated their opponents 7-5.
The men went on to win four out of six dual matches, clinching the victory over the Sacramento State Hornets. Both Arbiza and Gonzalez won their dual match giving them a combined record of 10-1 in dual play.
The match against Xavier was cancelled Thursday afternoon due to winter-like weather and will not be made up. The women looked to Sunday where they would take on Wichita State but unfortunately had to wait a little long to get back on the court after the match was cancelled due to rain.
On a cool Tuesday, the Mavericks took on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. After dropping the double point, the men fell short losing 4-3 and bringing their overall record to 6-4. The women ended the day with a victory for the Mavericks defeating the Islanders 4-2. Led by Elizabeth Thoms and Angeles de los Rios, the Mavericks were able to win four dual matches clinching the match against the Islanders and bringing their overall record to 7-3.
Thoms defeated Judit Vines 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 1 slot. With a 7-1 overall record. Thoms has been the leading force behind the Mavs' success and looks to continue the streak in the upcoming Sun Belt match.
The women will be back in action March 20 when they travel to Monroe, Louisiana to take on the ULM Warkawks. The men head to Las Cruces, New Mexico for a two-day event. The first match will be played March 13 against Penn followed by a match against New Mexico State the following day.
