LAFAYETTE, Louisiana - No. 7 Louisiana showed why it is the Sun Belt Conference favorite, defeating UT Arlington 18-0 in the Mavericks' league opener Friday at Lamson Park.
The Ragin' Cajuns (18-3, 3-1) hit five home runs, including a grand slam, in handing the Mavericks (14-11, 0-1) their secondconsecutive defeat. UL's Kelsey Vincent tied a school record with three homers. UTA, ninth in the nation in batting average, had just two hits.
"Lafayette is a strong team and that was a tough loss for our squad," UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said. "Tomorrow is a new day. We need to learn from our mistakes and move on."
UTA and Louisiana continue the three-game series with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on ESPN3.
Maverick starter Sam Montes pitched 2.1 innings and fell to 5-5. Montes gave up six earned runs on six hits, striking out one. Taylor Simmonds and Brittany May pitched a combined 1.2 innings in relief, giving up 12 earned runs.
The Ragin' Cajuns broke open the game with six runs on five hits in the second. The grand slam in the third helped build an 11-0 lead.
The Mavericks fell to 0-2 in Sun Belt openers in the team's second season in the conference.
