TROY, Ala. -- UT Arlington was unable to make the most of its opportunities as Troy swept the Mavericks in a Sun Belt doubleheader Sunday at Troy Softball Complex.
The Mavericks (27-24, 8-12) left 15 on base over two contests to close their road schedule. UTA went to 7-9 in 2015 in road play and have dropped six of the last eight games overall heading into the final weekend of the regular season.
"We had some opportunities we didn't cash in on and hit some balls hard right at people, that happens sometimes," UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said. "This group needs to focus on their love of the game, competitive nature and creating some luck of their own."
Nina Villanueva extended her streak of reaching safely to 23 games with a hit in each game. Haley Henson and Meagan Michele led the Mavs overall with three hits on Sunday. Michele had two doubles, while each added a run.
UTA is back in action when it welcomes in-state rival Texas State to Allen Saxe Field. The teams begin the three-game series on Saturday at 1 p.m., while Senior Day is scheduled at noon Sunday.
Game 1: Troy 5, UT Arlington 3
Final Stats
UT Arlington attempted to make a late rally in Game 1, however, the Mavericks left two stranded to end the game.
UTA, trailing 5-1 going to the seventh, scored two after Mya Anderson and Michele were brought home on a pair of singles with no out. However, UTA's next three hitters would be retired to end the threat.
Freshman Kayla Donaldson replaced Sam Montes in the circle in the first. Montes allowed two hits and walked one, however, she was charged with just one earned run as Donaldson worked around the bases-loaded jam. Donaldson would give up four earned runs, but would help Troy leave nine on base throughout.
Shelbi Sikes got UTA's offense on the board to respond to Troy's opening-inning run. Sikes would score after a throwing error by the shortstop allowed the sophomore to cross the plate.
Troy would score four unanswered runs over the next three innings to break open the 1-1 tie.
Rebecca Stokes led the Mavs with a 2-for-3 effort, adding one of two RBI for the Mavs.
Game 2: Troy 9, UT Arlington 4
Final Stats
UTA and Troy went back-and-forth until the fifth, when the Trojans would pull away by scoring the final six runs of the game.
The Mavericks had their opportunity in the top of the sixth, loading the bases with no out down 6-4. However, after two fly outs to right, the Troy left fielder made a diving snag that robbed UTA of potentially tying the game.
Troy came right back after the squandered chance to score three runs in the bottom half to pull away.
Anderson and Kacey Everett provided the Mavs a jolt of offense with home runs in the third and fourth respectively.
Anderson's three-run shot tied her with Meagan Michele (and two others) for third in single-season history with 12. Kacey Everett sent a solo shot to left to give UTA a 4-3 lead before the Trojans made their run.
