ARLINGTON, Texas - Three grand slams for No. 5 Louisiana fueled two run-rule victories over UT Arlington Saturday at Allan Saxe Field.
UTA dropped to 21-4 on the season and 0-2 in Sun Belt play after the 13-0 and 16-0 losses, both in five innings. The Mavs recorded just two hits, both in the opening game, with no base runners in the second as Kylee Trahan tossed her second career perfect game (third no-hitter).
"The No. 5 team came to our field and our girls got really tight and put a lot of pressure on themselves to compete," UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said. "We're definitely at two different locations in our programs right now, and we have to find a way to overcome this hump.
"This day does not define our season. It doesn't define our team and we have to move on and learn from it."
Louisiana (22-1, 4-0 SBC) notched 29 runs on 26 hits, including eight home runs. The win is the Ragin Cajuns' 16th in a row, one of the longest streaks in the nation. They now lead the all-time series 21-4.
The series finale will take place at noon Sunday at Allan Saxe Field.
Game 1: Louisiana 13, UT Arlington 0 (5)
The Ragin' Cajun bats couldn't be stopped as UT Arlington dropped Game 1, 13-0, in five innings.
A grand slam in the top of the first inning fueled the Ragin' Cajun offense and a four-run third gave Louisiana (21-1, 3-0 SBC) enough of an edge to complete the run-rule.
The series marks the second year in a row the Mavs have opened Sun Belt play against Louisiana.
Freshman Samantha Clakley (11-2) received her second loss of the season, tossing three innings and allowing nine runs, eight earned, on nine hits with pairs of strikeouts and walks.
Sandra Mendoza and Laura Curry both knocked singles in the bottom of the first inning, but the Maverick bats were silent from that point forward.
The Ragin' Cajuns tallied 10 hits on the day. The team added another run in the fourth on its second home run from Aleah Craighton.
Game 2: Louisiana 16, UT Arlington 0 (5)
Coming into Game 2 with an impenetrable amount of energy, Louisiana crushed another grand slam in the fourth inning to contribute to the win.
Just three batters later and still nobody out, the Ragin' Cajuns' Kelsey Vincent sent a screamer over the center field fence to add another three runs. The seven-run inning lifted Louisiana to its 11th run-rule of the year.
Louisiana's Kylee Trahan (9-1) etched a perfect game with nine strikeouts.
Sam Montes earned the loss for UTA and moved to 5-1. The junior allowed 10 runs on seven hits, two strikeouts and a walk.
Craighton smashed her second homer of the day in the third, a 2-run shot to left-center field, to up the score to 3-0. Her second of the game came in the fifth in the form of a grand slam, also Louisiana's third of the day.
Louisiana once again scored in the first inning as its lead off reached on a fielding error and later scored on a one-out single.
