MOBILE, Ala.- UT Arlington softball suffered its first three-game sweep of the season after falling in the finale to South Alabama 7-3 Sunday.
"The team made some good adjustments today against a strong pitcher and finally came through with a two-out RBI," UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said. "That was a big reason why we were successful early in the year. We need to use the success we had late in the game today and build off of it."
The Mavericks fell to 25-11 on the season and 4-8 in Sun Belt play, while the Jaguars improved to 24-11 and 12-2 in conference after winning their 12th consecutive league game. UTA returns home to Allan Saxe Field when it hosts ULM for a three-game series beginning on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Laura Curry recorded her second consecutive multiple hit game, going 2-for-4 with a run. Sandra Mendoza extended her hitting streak to 11 games following an RBI double in the seventh. The Mavs finished with seven hits, but were just 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
Curry picked up the first hit of the game in the first after she drilled a one-out triple to the left-centerfield gap, however, she'd be stranded at third. South Alabama made UTA pay as it was able to take advantage of its opportunities in the bottom half, scoring two runs after a defensive miscue.
USA tacked on a run in the fourth and sent four across in the fifth to build a 7-0 lead before UTA could answer.
Curry started the sixth off with a one-out infield single and advanced to second on a wild pitch before Britnea Barilli ripped a double off the right-centerfield wall to score the freshman. Foster followed suit with a two-out single to score Barilli.
Following a scoreless bottom half for the Jags, UTA continued its comeback bid. After a one-out single by Rebecca Stokes, Mendoza stepped to the plate with her 10-game hitting streak on the line. She quickly smoked a double to left, scoring Kayci Moore, who came in to run for Stokes at first. With the Mavs threatening to score more, USA's Devin Brown retired the next two batters to end the game.
