ATLANTA - In a game in which all six runs were scored in two innings, UT Arlington was on the wrong end of a 4-2 decision at Georgia State on Sunday in the series finale.
"The girls played hard," UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said. "We have to learn to find a way to win regardless of the adversity we are facing. These players are showing great character but now is the time to start peaking."
With the loss, the Mavericks moved to 28-14 overall and 7-11 in Sun Belt play, while the Panthers improved to 26-24 and 9-9 in the conference.
Sandra Mendoza recorded two of the four Mavericks hits, pushing her hit-streak to 17 games, matching a career-high. Mendoza started the year with a hit in each of the first 17 games. Mallory Foster and Krista Rude each tallied hits for the Mavs.
Taylor Simmonds got the start on the mound and pitched the first two innings. Samantha Clakley entered in relief in the third and was given the loss after she was charged with three runs. She fell to 17-10 for the season.
The Panthers struck first with a two-out home run in the opening frame.
The Mavs got on the board and took the lead in the third. Shelbi Sikes got the inning started, drawing her 30th walk of the season, putting her tied for eighth on the Mavericks single-season walks list. Mendoza quickly followed with a RBI double to score Moore, who pinch-ran for Sikes.
UTA did a great a job of manufacturing their second run of the inning to take the lead. Following Mendoza's double, Laura Curry laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move her to third. Brianna Burchianti followed up with a sacrifice fly to score Mendoza.
Georgia State regained the lead in the bottom half, scoring three on three walks and two hits.
Both teams were held scoreless through the next four innings, as the Mavericks were unable to mount any sort of comeback.
The Mavs are on the road for a midweek, nonconference game with Lamar on April 27, before returning home for their final home series of the season with a three-game slate against Troy April 30-May 1. Sunday's contest, starting at 11 a.m. is UTA's Bark at the Park game.
