ARLINGTON, Texas - Troy's offense came in waves as the Trojans swept a doubleheader in Sun Belt play on Saturday at Allan Saxe Field.
The Trojans (31-19, 11-9 Sun Belt) sent 17 across the plate over two games as it was able to outlast the Mavs, 5-4, in nine innings in the opener before take a run-rule, 12-2, win in the finale.
Freshman Samantha Clakley was a bright spot for UTA (28-16, 7-13) as she bested her career-high in strikeouts during Game 1. Clakely struck out nine to top the career mark by one. However, despite the strong performance, fell to 17-11 with the loss, giving up five runs.
"Today we didn't come out and handle business like we needed to," Clakley said. "We didn't do the little things right like we needed to as well. We need to come out and work hard tomorrow like we know we are capable of."
The Mavericks and Trojans conclude the three-game series on Senior Day on Sunday at 12 p.m. UTA will honor its five seniors at the conclusion.
Game 1: Troy 5, UT Arlington 4 (9)
The Trojans scored five unanswered as they completed the comeback in extra innings against UTA in the opener.
UT Arlington broke open a scoreless game in the third with a three-run frame. Sandra Mendoza knocked a RBI single to left to bring home Cy'Andria Newton, reaching on her first-career hit to lead off.
Brianna Burchianti followed it up three batters later with a two-run single to right to score Mendoza, as well as Curry on an error by the right fielder.
With Clakley mowing the Troy batters down, including striking out five over two innings between the third and fourth, UTA seemed on the way to taking the opener.
However, the heroics of Khadija Neely helped Troy battled back. Neely belted a solo shot in the fifth to put the Trojans on the board, and after two runs in the fifth tied the game, would knock a two-run shot in the ninth.
UTA cut the lead to just one with two outs in the ninth, but would have the tying run thrown out at third on the same play.
Game 2: Troy 12, UT Arlington 2 (5)
The flood gates opened for the Trojans over the period of two innings as UTA was run-ruled in Game 2.
The Mavericks picked up a pair of runs, scoring first once again, in the second as Mallory Foster knocked the first of two hits in the game for the junior.
Troy answered quickly in the third. Neely continued to plague the Mavs with another shot, a three-run knock and things opened up in the fourth. The Trojans scored nine runs, mostly coming without an out, to expand its lead as it had nine hits in the inning.
Foster joined Britnea Barilli for the lone Mavs with multi-hit games. Troy's Hannah Day finished with a game-high four hits.
Taylor Simmonds was credited with the loss after giving up three runs. Simmonds fell to 2-1.
