MOBILE, Ala.- UT Arlington softball dropped a pair of games at SA-Mobile, which was receiving votes in the latest NFCA/USA Today Top-25 Poll, 6-1 and 5-1 Saturday.
"We had a couple of opportunities that we weren't able to take full advantage of," sophomore Taylor Simmonds said. "If we come out tomorrow, play like we are capable of and start taking advantage of those small opportunities, we can definitely have a different outcome."
Simmonds was the bright spot for the Mavs on the day, entering both games in relief, retiring 14 of the 16 batters faced.
Sandra Mendoza recorded a hit in each game, while Laura Curry was 2-for-4 in Game 2.
The Mavs and Jags conclude their series on Sunday at 12 p.m.
Game 1: SA-Mobile 6, UT Arlington 1
Final Stats
The Mavs fell behind early giving up three runs in the first following a couple of defensive miscues.
The Jags' Devin Brown was dominant through the first 2.1 innings, retiring the first seven UTA batters before Krista Rude reached on an error by the Jags' centerfielder. Back-to-back strikeouts erased the threat.
Sam Montes replaced Simbeck on the mound in second, throwing up a zero before surrendering three in the third. Simmonds entered the game in relief with one out in third, quickly getting out of a bases loaded jam.
Britnea Barilli gave UTA its first hit in the fourth on a single to right-center field. Mallory Foster reached base on fielding error by the Jags' second baseman, moving Barilli to third on the play. Kacey Moore pinch-ran for Foster at first and the Mavs pulled off a brilliant double steal to score Barilli from third.
The Mavs posed a threat in sixth after Mendoza led off the inning with a single, pushing her hit-streak to nine games. With two outs, Foster doubled down the left-field line, her third in the last two games, to put two in scoring position, however, a deep fly to left stranded both.
Making her first appearance since March 12, Simmonds was impressive in the circle, retiring 11 of 13 batters she faced.
"I went in knowing our situation, knowing it was important that I try and do my best and try to keep some runs off the board to give our batters a chance to hit the ball and put some runs across," Simmonds said.
Simbeck took the loss, moving to 3-2 on the season. Mendoza, Barilli and Foster provided the hits for the Mavs.
Game 2: SA-Mobile 5, UT Arlington 1
Final Stats
The Jags took the lead the early, scoring one on a bases=loaded sacrifice fly to Barilli in left.
UTA put together a rally in the third to tie the game at one apiece. After Rebecca Stokes reached on a one-out single, she was moved to third on a double off the bat of Mendoza. Curry sent Stokes across the plate with a infield single. Foster came close to putting the Mavs into the lead, but her hard-hit one-hopper went right at the second baseman.
The Jaguars regained the lead in the fourth on a bases-loaded, two out infield single and plated two more with bloop singles. The lead reached 5-1 in the fifth on a RBI single.
UTA had its chance again in the sixth with the bases loaded, however, was unable to take advantage of the opportunity.
Simmonds took over for Samantha Clakley in the sixth, sitting the Jags down in order.
Mendoza, Curry and Stokes each recorded hits in the game with Curry being the only one to tally multiple hits, going 2-for-4 at the plate.
