SAN MARCOS, Texas - In its final regular-season game before heading to the Sun Belt Championship, UT Arlington dropped an 8-0 decision in five innings at Texas State on Saturday.
"A new season starts now," UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said. "We need to rest up and get healthy so we can have our best ready for the game Wednesday."
The Mavs ended the regular season with a 29-19 overall record and were 8-16 in the Sun Belt, while the Bobcats improved to 36-18 and 15-9 in the SBC. Texas State has won the last six games between the two teams with the Mavs owning the overall series 59-57.
The Mavs threatened early with Sandra Mendoza leading the game off with a hit but was unable to score after advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Laura Curry.
Both teams were held scoreless through three before the Bobcats got on the board in a big way in the fourth. Texas State drew a two-out bases loaded walk to score the first run before blasting a grand slam one batter later to take the 5-0 lead.
The Bobcats extended their lead with an RBI sacrifice fly in the fourth before scoring two runs in the fifth to put the run-rule in affect and end the game.
Mendoza recorded two of the three Mavericks hits to move the new UTA single-season hits record to 76. Kacey Everett tallied the other hit with a two-out double off the left field wall in the fourth.
Up next the Mavs head to South Alabama for the Sun Belt Championships beginning Wednesday, May 11. Seedings and game times will be determined at the conclusion of this weekend's Sun Belt games.
