ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington sports year was filled with upsets, championships, buzzer-beaters and memorable performances that will go down in Maverick history.
Leading up to the 2016-17 seasons beginning with UTA volleyball in August, UTA Athletics is making sure we do not forget the accomplishments of the past season. Running from June through August, we will be counting down the top-15 moments and performances with "Best of 2015-16" features.
Moment No. 9: UTA women's tennis finishes undefeated at home
With the last loss at the UTA Tennis Center taking place in their opening match of the 2015 season, Mavericks opponents know how tough it is to win in Arlington.
UT Arlington women's tennis team held serve in the 2016 season, going 11-0 at home in the process of running its home winning streak to 23 matches.
Along the way, UTA knocked off big opponents on its home court in a schedule that tested the Mavericks in every match. The schedule included a 4-3 victory over No. 45 New Mexico, a three-match sweep during a homestand that welcomed UTSA, Memphis and Metroplex rival SMU.
The home stretch helped UTA to a 17-5 overall record in the 2016 season and a No. 75 finish in the ITA/Oracle Division I Tennis Rankings. The 17 wins are tied for the second most in program history, one shy of the all-time record set in 2005.
Despite falling in the Sun Belt Championship semifinals, the season still goes down in UTA history. Elizabeth Thoms concluded her career with 74 career victories, good for a tie for third in all-time wins. Agustina Serio was named the SBC Player to Watch after 24 wins, 10th in single-season history.
