ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington men's cross country team vaulted to its second-highest regional ranking in school history in this week's United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) poll.
UTA moved up two spots to No. 4 in the South Central Region after its season-opening victory at the Gerald Richey Invitational. Despite not running two of its top runners, the Mavericks had a perfect total of 15 points, sweeping the first five individual spots in the 3.2-mile event.
The highest that UTA has ever been listed in the South Central is third. That ranking came on Oct. 21, 2013, following an impressive national showing at the Crimson Classic.
In this week's poll, the Maverick men sit behind only Arkansas, Texas and Texas A&M.
"It's always an honor to be ranked among the region's elite," UTA coach John Sauerhage said. "But we will need to prove it week after week, with our goal being to run our best in October and November."
On the women's side, UT Arlington is 11th in this week's poll after debuting at No. 9 in the preseason rankings. The women's team placed third among seven schools on Saturday at the squad's home meet.
Both UTA teams return to action Saturday at 8 a.m. at the Ken Garland Invitational in Denton.
