Postgame Notes

  • UTA went to 1-0 by taking its season opener 61-58. Incarnate word fell to 0-2 after dropping its opener on Friday at Oklahoma State. UTA took a 2-1 advantage in the all-time series, the matchup was the first between the clubs since 2013, UTA coach Krista Gerlich's first home game as the skipper.
  • The Lady Mavs improved to 21-24 all-time in season openers and 32-12 in home openers.
  • After winning the tip, UTA senior Rebekah VanDijk scored the opening points of the 2017-18 season with a lay in just 11 seconds into the game. VanDijk entered the night with 37 double-doubles, tied for first in NCAA active career leaders, but was just one rebound shy of the feat with 11 points and nine rebounds.
  • Making their Lady Maverick debuts on Saturday, junior transfer Laurynn McGowen, freshman Jennifer Parker, sophomore transfer Brooke Alexander, redshirt freshman Kelsey Johnson.
  • Cierra Johnson improved to 16th in the Sun Belt record books with her 248th-career steal.
  • UTA's bench outscored the Cardinals 23-13, led by Shelby Richards with nine points.
  • UTA hit on just 16-of-32 free throws, but had eight in the final 10 minutes, including knocking down six in a row to close the game.
  • Kelsey Johnson's lay in at the first-half buzzer gave UTA a 26-24 lead, a lead it would not give up for the remainder.
  • UTA continues its stretch of three games in five days when it hosts Oral Roberts on Monday night at 7 p.m. The contest is featured on ESPN3.
