By Brooke Ortale | UTAMavs.com

TEMPE, Ariz. - UTA softball dropped a pair to Saint Mary's and Arizona State on Day 2 of the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. Saturday.

With the losses, the Mavs move to 1-3 on the year, while the Gaels and Sun Devils improved to 1-3 and 6-0.

Seven different Mavericks recorded hits on the day, with Laura Curry, Krista Rude, Sandra Mendoza and Aileen Garcia tallying hits in both games. Curry and Rude have hits in all four games this season.

UTA wraps up the weekend with a single game tomorrow against No. 17 Utah at 12:45 p.m.

Game 1: Saint Mary's 4, UTA 1
Final Stats

Saint Mary's jumped on top early, scoring a run in the second.

Both teams were held scoreless through the next two innings until the Mavs were able to plate one in the fifth. Curry led off the inning with a single, then promptly stole second. Rude moved her over to third on sacrifice bunt. Mendoza, like she has throughout her career, came up clutch with an RBI base hit to center to score Curry and tie the game at one.

The Gaels responded quickly scoring three in the top of the sixth to take the 4-1 lead and victory.

Mendoza was 2-for-2 in the game with two walks, reaching base in all four of her plate appearances. Garcia had her second career multiple hit game, going 2-for-3.

Sam Clakley threw 5.2 innings to take the loss giving up four runs, only two earned and move to 1-1. Mariah Denson threw 1.1 innings in relief, striking out one.

Game 2: Arizona State 8, UTA 0 (6)
Final Stats

The Mavericks loaded the bases with nobody out to start the game but a tough-luck line drive double play right at the first baseman erased the threat.

Arizona State, who is receiving votes in both the USA Today/NFCA Coaches and ESPN.com/USA Softball Top-25 polls, took the lead, scoring three in the first and two in the second.

The Mavs posed a threat in the fifth after Cy'Andria Newton and Brittany Wyllie leadoff the inning with back-to-back base hits to left, but another tough luck double play ended the inning.

The UTA defense was able to keep the Sun Devils bats in check through three until they scored three in the sixth to win it, 8-0.

Mariah Denson took the loss in her first-career start to fall to 0-2. Sam Montes made her first appearance of the season going 2.1 innings, allowing three runs on five hits.
