ARLINGTON, Texas - Two-out RBI base hits led UTA softball to a 6-0 win over former Southland Conference foe Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday at Allan Saxe Field.
"I liked the energy the girls had," UTA coach Kristie Fox said. "Sam (Clakley) came out ready to go after that long game Sunday. I loved seeing how well she recovered and how mentally tough she was coming out here today."
Scoring with two-outs was the theme of the game for UTA, scoring all six runs with two outs.
The Mavericks wasted no time putting runs on the board, scoring three in the first off of two-out RBI by Mallory Foster and Aileen Garcia.
Cy'Andria Newton scored the Mavericks fourth run of the game in the third, drilling a single to right center and coming around to score on the next pitch via a stolen base and two throwing errors by the Ladyjacks.
UTA closed out the scoring in the sixth with a two RBI single by Kacey Everett to score Shelbi Sikes and Newton.
Sam Clakley got the start in the circle, striking out three, allowing two hits in four innings of work for her league-leading 11th win of the season.
Mariah Denson entered in relief in the fifth, allowing one hit, while striking out two in three innings to earn the second save of her career.
Newton, Everett and Garcia each recorded a game-high two hits, while Everett also drove in a game high two runs.
With the win, the Mavericks improved to 15-10, while the Ladyjacks fell to 8-15. The Mavs return to Sun Belt action with a three-game series at No. 18 Louisiana March 18-19.
