ARLINGTON, Texas -- UTA softball had the magic sticks going to silence Incarnate Word 11-3 in five innings, but couldn't keep momentum going and to Tulsa in part two of a doubleheader on Saturday.
Day 2 of the Maverick Classic at Allan Saxe Field saw UTA (12-9) run rule Incarnate Word (4-14) 11-3 off of 13 hits. Five Mavericks tallied at least two hits and three notched at least a pair of RBI. Tulsa's (11-8) Emily Watson was nearly perfect in Game 2 to lift her squad as the Mavs could only notch two hits, while striking out 16 times.
UTA wraps up the Maverick Classic on Sunday with a second chance meeting with Tulsa at 11 a.m.
Reagan Wright was 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI against the Cardinals. Laura Curry and Shelbi Sikes were both 2-for-2, each with a run and a pair of RBI. Sam Montes picked up the win to improve to 3-0. The senior allowed three runs on eight hits and three strikeouts in three innings of work.
The Mavericks claimed the run-rule victory in the bottom of the fifth. A fielding error loaded the bases for Wright, who doubled down the left field line to close the book.
The Mavs' fourth inning made the run rule possible as the squad amassed five runs on four hits to stretch the lead 9-3. UTA struck first in the bottom of the second as Wright led the frame off with her third home run of the of the year. The blast ignited a fire for the Mavs and singles from Sikes and Sandra Mendoza tacked on another pair of runs.
Whitney Walton lifted her fifth homer run of the season in the third inning to regain the advantage 4-3 for UTA.
Incarnate Word took its hacks early with a pair of singles in the first inning, but couldn't see the fruits of its labor until the third. Back-to-back singles to lead the frame off turned into a five-hit rally. Base knocks from Lacie Stevens and Brigitte Gauvin plated three runs to tie it up.
Curry and Krista Rude were the lone hitters for UTA in the second half of the doubleheader. Sam Clakley (9-4) earned the loss in her five innings, tossing five runs, two earned, on five hits, three strikeouts and a walk. Mariah Denson came in to relieve the sophomore, handing the Hurricane its final two runs on three hits and a pair of punchouts.
