TROY, Ala. - After advancing into the double-elimination portion of the bracket earlier in the day, No. 5 UTA was unable to get the offense going against No. 4 South Alabama, falling 5-0 in the Sun Belt Championship second round. The Mavs won their opener, topping Coastal Carolina to open the tournament.
The Mavericks, going to 30-25 overall, will await the loser of Game 6 (Thursday, 12:30 p.m.) as the teams battle in the losers bracket at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday evening. South Alabama (34-18) advanced to take on No. 1 Louisiana in Thursday's opener at 10 a.m.
"I think today really showed why we emphasis our defense playing clean so much," UTA coach Kristie Fox said. "The girls know what we need to do to be successful. It will be good for us to get a good nights rest, this team knows how to bounce back."
UTA's opponent on Thursday will be one of three teams. Texas State, who earned a double-bye as the No. 2 seed will play the winner of No. 7 ULM and No. 3 Georgia State, the loser of Texas State's matchup will move to the lower bracket to face the Mavericks.
South Alabama starter Devin Brown - who was not available in UTA's 2-1 series win in April - limited the Mavs to just one hit in improving to 18-6 on the year. Sam Clakley fell to 24-13 and remained in a tie for 3rd in UTA history for single-season wins. Clakley pitched four frames, was on the hook for three runs - one earned - and struck out four. Clakley's second start of the day marked the first time since the opening two games of the season she had started a pair in the same day.
Shelbi Sikes provided the only offense for the Mavs as she spoiled Brown's no-hit bid in the top of the fifth.
It was a pair of two-out hits that helped the Jaguars build an early lead. A two-out single in the second led to two crossing the plate, and then another on two outs in the fourth pushed the lead to 3-0 in the fourth. The Jags sent a run across in both the fifth and sixth innings to add insurance.
Freshman pitcher Mariah Denson got her first experience in the SBC postseason tournament. Denson tossed 2.0 innings and gave up two runs, neither earned.
