ARLINGTON, Texas - Iowa State used a pair of solo home runs to top UT Arlington 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Allan Saxe Field, spoiling the first of a five-game homestand for the Mavericks.
UTA (9-12, 0-2 Sun Belt) were hurt by two home runs off the bat of ISU' Sami Williams, coming in the third and sixth innings. Bri Burchianti provided UTA with its lone run of the day coming off her home run in the third that just made it over the left-field wall. UTA is 0-2 against Big 12 foes this year, meeting Iowa State for the first time.
"I didn't think we played bad," UTA coach Peejay Brun said. "It is one of those things where a game like this is going to be decided by one run. So i told them to keep battling. They brought the right energy today, that was a good pitcher throwing harder than any other pitcher we've faced this year. I told them to keep their heads up and we will come back out here tomorrow."
The Mavericks, having dropped their last six, have seen a streak of four games being decided by just one run. The Mavs will look to have a short memory as they return to the field on Wednsday at 4 p.m. vs. Incarnate Word on Daddy Daughter Date Day at Allan Saxe Field.
"The big thing is the leaders," Brun said. "As long as we make it a short memory on our end the team will follow. The thing I have been trying to teach this team is that win or lose, you have to move on. I am not too worried about moving on to tomorrow, they just might need some time today to get over this one."
QUICK HITS:
- Burchianti's solo home run in the third was her first of the year.

- UTA is 0-9 when trailing after six innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Iowa State opened the game up with an infield single the right, but that would be the lone runner to reach for either team through the first two frames.
Nearly reaching two and a half without a baserunner, Williams stopped the streak with the first of her two homers, a two-out hit over left center. Burchianti provided UTA a quick response in the bottom half of the third, sending her shot just over the left-field pole down the line.
ISU put together a four-hit frame in the sixth , but the only run came across on the solo shot, leaving runners on as a double play tamed the threat. The Mavs had an opportunity to tie things up with runners on the corners in the bottom half, but left them stranded on a fly out to left, UTA's best threat to tie the game.
