ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington was on the shortend of Game 1 as Georgia State won 7-1, but the Mavericks lead in Game 2 when play resumes on Sunday at 11 a.m. Game 3 will begin approximately 30 minutes later.
The Mavs (10-13, 0-3) were punished by a second-inning grand slam from Georgia State (14-11, 1-2) and were unable to chip away more than a run to open Bark at the Park day at Allan Saxe Field on Saturday. Laura Curry paced the offense the offense with a pair of hits, driving in UTA's lone run as she brought home Kjirstyn Murphy in the bottom of the second.
JoJo Valencia was knocked with the loss after pitching 6.1 innings, allowing seven runs - six earned - and walking four. Alyssa Chavez pitched 0.2 in relief and did not allow a runner.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
After stranding two hits in the top of the first, Georgia State broke through in a big way in the next frame, sending a one out pitch over the left-field fence. UTA chipped into the lead in the bottom half with a two-out rally. Murphy singled, was pushed over on a walk and came in on Curry's hit through the middle.
UTA left runners on in both the third and fourth innings, while Georgia State built up its total with four hits coming in the seventh to plate three.
