FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Arkansas - receiving votes in the Top-25 polls - knocked 18 hits over the course of two games in a doubleheader sweep of UT Arlington on Tuesday at Bogle Park.
The Mavericks fell in the opener 6-0, but came back in an offensive battle in Game 2, falling 10-6. The losses push UTA's record to 12-15 overall as it prepares for a three-game series at Coastal Carolina on Saturday that opens with a doubleheader. Arkansas improved to 22-5 for the season as it went to 4-2 all-time against the Mavericks in the first meeting since 2012.
Finishing with just a hit in Game 1, the bats were able to come alive in the second to attempt a comeback. Trailing 6-0, UTA would score three in the fifth to cut the lead in half. However, Arkansas plated a pair in both the bottom half and then in the sixth before UTA sent another three across in the seventh.
Bryanna Datko led the Mavs offense with a pair of hits, nearly completing a three-hit game but a hard-hit ball up the middle going for an error. Krista Rude finished with a pair of runs, while Whitney Walton drove a team-high three RBI.
JoJo Valencia was knocked with the loss in the opening game, pitching 5.1 innings. She allowed six runs - five earned, while walking seven. Randi Phillips started off well in Game 2, but the Razorbacks would finish with 10 hits against, scoring nine runs against the freshman. Alyssa Chavez pitched 1.2 in relief, giving up just one earned run.
Battling while down 6-0, UTA broke through against Arkansas in the fifth. The first three base runners would reach for UTA and a pair of ground outs provided a pair of runs. Rude would complete the frame's offense as she came in on a passed ball.
UTA took advantage of mishaps in the seventh to bring in another three. A walk to open the frame was sent around on Walton's homer into center. Another passed ball ended scoring with Bri Burchianti running home on two outs.
