HOW IT HAPPENED:
Mendoza wasted little time reaching in the opener as she drew a full-count walk to open the game. Rude followed it up with another free pass and Aileen Garcia made Coastal pay on her sac bunt ending up forcing an error and bringing in two runs. Things calmed down outside of a run in the third for UTA - coming on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch.
The fifth inning broke the game open for the Mavericks and appeared to send UTA on its way to a run-rule, scoring six runs to take a 10-0 lead. However, Coastal Carolina battled back to score seven in the bottom half. Laura Curry's single down the line plated two, while a string of three hits would bring in six runs for UTA. Home runs would be the leading cause of offense for the Chanticleers in the bottom half, but they'd leave the bases loaded with the leading run at the dish. Coastal wouldn't reach base for the remainder, as Phillips combined with Alyssa Chavez to close out the game.
The teams were quiet in the first two frames of Game 2 before UTA scored two runs on three hits in the third. Sandra combined with her sister Melanie Mendoza to score on Rude's infield base knock. A two-run homer tied the game in the fourth, but UTA's offense kept going with a four-spot in the fifth. Bryanna Datko started it off with a solo home run to left. Aileen Garcia knocked a two-out single down the line to score another, and KJ Murphy cleaned it up with a homer to left. Home runs from Coastal in both the fifth and seventh cut into the lead, but were not enough to complete a comeback.
