SB: Rally falls short vs. Tulsa in Game 1

Box Score March 4, 2018

Final Stats

DENTON, Texas - Sandra Mendoza finished with her second consecutive three-hit game, but it was not enough as Tulsa pulled away late to top UT Arlington 7-3 in the day's opener at Lovelace Field.

The Mavericks (9-8) were down by four runs going into the bottom of the third and rallied to within a run of the Hurricanes (12-7). However, Tulsa plated three runs in the top of the seventh to clinch the final score. UTA matches Tulsa's eight hits in the game, while both teams finished with two errors.

Three UTA players finished with multi-hits. Mendoza led the attack with a 3-for-4 effort with two runs scored. Rude was 2-for-4 with a RBi and Laura Curry knocked a pair of hits in three appearances with a run.

It was a pain in the circle for UTA, but despite a good start, JoJo Valencia ended her perfect streak for the weekend, falling to 3-5 on the season after allowing four runs - three earned - and five hits. Randi Phillips pitched the final four innings and was knocked with all three runs in the seventh.

QUICK HITS:

  • Rude extended her hitting streak to a team season best 10 games.
  • Rude has reached safely in 11 consecutive games.
  • Mendoza leads the team with two three-hit games, coming on back-to-back games.
  • Laura Curry has reached in five consecutive.
  • UTA is 2-5 when the opponents scores first.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
After Tulsa led the game off with a home run, a long third saw five combined runs by both teams. The Hurricanes used a string of doubles to score a run in the third, plating three on four hits, but left two on base. UTA provided its first response in the bottom half. Rude's infield single brought in Curry, while a fielder's choice by Whitney Walton brought in Mendoza. UTA put two in scoring position, but a ground out to first ended the threat.

UTA pulled within a run in the fifth. Back-to-back singles set the table. Another fielder's choice, this time from Aileen Garcia, plated Mendoza for her second run of the day.

The Hurricanes added insurance in the seventh, sending three across coming on three hits.
