SB: Huge sixth lifts UTA over Oklahoma State

Box Score April 10, 2018

Final Stats

STILLWATER, Okla. - Trailing 2-1, UT Arlington broke open the game with an eight-run sixth to top Oklahoma State 9-2 on Tuesday night at Cowgirl Stadium.

The Mavericks (20-18) topped Oklahoma State (No. 26 in the ESPN.com/USA Softbal poll) to earn their first win over a Big 12 opponent since 2008. UTA powered two home runs in the sixth and three overall on the day on the way to nine hits overall. Oklahoma State fell to 18-12 with the loss.

"They were fantastic today," UTA coach Peejay Brun said of her team. "They were winning every pitch and winning every inning. When we were down 2-1, I felt like they were pulling it together. It was one of those games where it was just fun as a coach to just sit back and watch what they were doing."

Whitney Walton, hit a big RBI double with the bases loaded in the crucial frame to finish with two hits. Aileen Garcia, belting a home run to add to the lead finished with three RBI, followed up by Reagan Wright, who knocked the 13th homer of her career - fifth in the last four games, tied for 10th in UTA history.

"It was a rush of energy," Walton said. "I was just focusing on that there wasn't anyone on base. I was thinking up the middle, but that works. It was awesome (seeing the home runs), I almost missed them because I had my hands up too high."

Kjirstyn Murphy smashed the third homer of her freshman campaign, coming in the second. Sandra Mendoza's leadoff double to the wall in the first pushed the senior's hitting streak to 12 games.

Randi Phillips picked up the 11th win of her season, coming in for a big relieft outing that she went 4.2 frames in, giving up seven hits but no runs. JoJo Valencia had a quality start, giving up two earned and four hits in 2.1 innings. Former Maverick Sam Clakley picked up the loss for the Cowgirls, allowing four runs, one earned, in a 5.1-inning start.

"After we left the weekend with our pitching staff, there were things that were tough but they came in and just did their job, not too much but just enough for the defense to do something behind them," Brun said."

UTA continues action when it travels to Georgia Southern on the weekend. The three-game series begins with a Saturday doubleheader in Statesboro, Ga.

HOT IT HAPPENED:
After Mendoza was unable to come around to score in the first on her game-opening double, Oklahoma State came back in the bottom half with a one-out home run, a no-doubter over the right-centerfield wall. Murphy tied the game up in the second with her solo shot, but Oklahoma State would regain the lead in the third as a pair of hits equaled a run. However, OSU couldn't expand it further a line out to center left the bases load.

UTA couldn't get things going in the fourth and fifth, stranding a runner in each before a break in the sixth opened up the flood gates.

The Mavericks were able to take advantage of defensive miscues from the Cowgirls as an error pushed the first run across with Kacyi Moore coming home. Cy'Andria Newton was able to come in on another error, a throw from the left fielder going over the catcher's head.

Laura Curry drew a walk, loading the bases back up for Walton. Walton smashed a double down the left-field line on a 1-2 count to plate a pair, followed by Garcia's three-run shot and Wright's solo blast to make it back-to-back.

Oklahoma State was able to get runners on, but left one stranded in the sixth and another two in the seventh as a pop out to Garcia at first clinched the victory. OSU finished with 11 hits, stranding 10 on base overall.
