HOUSTON - UTA starter JoJo Valencia combined with Randi Phillips to allow just two hits, helping UT Arlington to a 2-0 win over Houston Baptist on Tuesday at Husky Field.
Valencia pushed UTA's winning streak to four games in her five-inning gem as the Mavericks improved to 18-16. Valencia allowed just two hits, striking out one and only allowing one free pass to improve to 8-11 in her 18th start. Phillips tossed a perfect final two frames, earning her fourth save of the campaign. HBU fell to 6-20 overall.
Laura Curry led the offense with a pair of hits, while runs came from Kjirstyn Murphy and Sandra Mendoza, Curry getting the lone RBI of the day. The Mavs pounded out eight hits and had their opportunities to add to its two-run advantage, but left nine strandedon base.
The Mavericks continue in their eight-game road trip when they travel to ULM on the weekend. A Saturday doubleheader gets action started, while the series wraps up on Sunday. The Mavs have won their last three SBC series, vaulting up to third in the league standings.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Mendoza and Reagan Wright gave UTA an early threat by reaching to open the first and second innings respectively, but were unable to be brought home. HBU stranded a runner on second in the second, opening the gates for UTA to open scoring in the next half.
Mendoza, reaching on a fielder's choice, stole second with one out and advanced to third on an error. A second consecutive error scored Mendoza as the shortstop was unable to make the play on Whitney Walton's at-bat.
The Mavs doubled up their lead in the fourth with a two-out rally being completed by Curry. Her single into left brought in Murphy, who had reached earlier in the frame on a single into center.
After the Huskies grounded into a double play, HBU would not put a base runner on the base paths for the final three innings as UTA took the win.
