MONROE, La. - UT Arlington saw the end of its winning streak and league series streak come to an end as ULM took both in a Sunday doubleheader at ULM Softball Complex.
The Mavericks entered having won five consecutive games and three Sun Belt series in a row, but fell to 19-16 overall and 8-6 in the league with ULM taking Game 1 by a 4-2 final and Game 2 at 7-6. UTA continues its season-long eight game on Tuesday when the Mavs take on Big 12 foe Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla. ULM improved to 21-14 overall and 8-7.
Reagan Wright continued to swing a hot bat on Sunday, knocking her fourth homer of the weekend - having sent three over the fence in Game 1 of the series. Sandra Mendoza kept her hitting streak alive as it was pushed to 11 games with hits in each game. Melanie Mendoza knocked a pair of hits in each game, including her first-career home run coming in the seventh of Game 1.
Five Mavs finished with multi-hit performances in the series finale as Sandra had a pair to to go with two runs, Laura Curryy, Aileen Garcia and Newton also joining in on the action. UTA finished with 12 hits compared to ULM's seven, but stranded seven, including the tying run on second.
UTA's tandem in the circle had a quality Sunday, but couldn't get the crucial out to prevent damage. Valencia was knocked with the loss to open the day as she went 4.2 frames, allowing four earned on three hits, walking two. Randi Phillips went just 1.1 in Game 2, being knocked for seven earned on four hits. Each pitcher had quality relief outing to relieve one another. Phillips tossed the final 1.1 in the opener, allowing just one hit, while Valencia threw 4.2 innings of scoreless ball in Game 2, giving up just three hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game 1 was a game of opportunities for the Mavericks as UTA was unable to hold onto a 1-0 lead going into the fifth. Wright drew a leadoff walk in the second and was able to come in on a hard hit ball through the middle by Cy'Andria Newton to open scoring.
The UTA staff got into trouble in the fifth and ULM capitalized. The Warhawks sent four across the dish, including a two-run shot to right that proved to be the game winner. The Mavs threatened in the seventh with two in scoring position, but a fly out to right, and a runner-left-early at third ended the opener. The Mavs stranded eight on the base paths and were just 2-for-6 with runners in scoring position.
The Mavs pushed the opening run across once again in the series finale, scoring in the top of the first as Aileen Garcia singles to bring in Mendoza - who opened the day with a first-pitch chopper over the third baseman.
ULM came right back in the bottom half to begin a string of seven runs in the first two innings. A double and single got things going in the bottom of the first, followed by a two-out shot over the wall. UTA's pitching staff had a string of 4-of-5 hit batters in the second, helping send four across in the second.
Wright brought the Mavs back into the game with her two-run shot in the third, her fourth of the weekend, and after a scoreless fourth and fifth, UTA made its charge back within a run. A double from Melanie Mendoza down the right field line set the stage with two in scoring position, allowing Sandra's infield single to begin a three-run sixth. Curry drover a single in front of the centerfield to bring in a run, and Walton's sac fly trimmed it down to just a one-run lead. Aileen Garcia put a charge into a ball to left, but the ULM left fielder made a running catch at the wall to prevent the tying run to score.
