Men’s Golf Resumes Fall Season Friday And Saturday In New Mexico
9/27/2018 3:34:00 PM | Men's Golf
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The UT Arlington men's golf team resumes its fall schedule this weekend when the Mavericks head to New Mexico's William H. Tucker Intercollegiate Friday and Saturday, Sept. 28-29, at The Championship Golf Course.
Â
Both days will be shotgun starts, with Friday's continues 36 holes commencing at 7:30 a.m. local (8:30 Central) and Saturday's final round beginning at 8 a.m. (9 Central). Pairings and live scoring will be available all tournament via Golfstat by clicking here or by visiting the link accompanying this release. Additionally, updates will be posted on the official Twitter account of the program @UTAMavsGolf.
Â
The Mavs' five-man lineup will feature the following quintet at the lengthy par-72, 7,555-yard layout:
Â
1) Tanner Gore
2) Paul Gonzalez
3) Kyle Cox
4) Caleb Hicks
5) Jacob Massengale
Â
That lineup features four of the same five golfers who teed it up in UTA's season-opening tournament earlier this month at UTSA's Lone Star Invitational, with the lone exception being Massengale. The sophomore will be playing in just his second collegiate tournament – and his first as counting-score member – after competing as an individual at the Texas Intercollegiate last September and recording three-consecutive rounds of 77.
Â
Gore is the lone upperclassman in the Mavericks' lineup this week, and the senior will be looking to improve upon his team-leading 224 performance (72-75-77) at the same tournament last year. Gore paced UTA at the Lone Star Invitational, finishing in a tie for 10th place overall after rounds of 76 and 70.
Â
Gonzalez was just a shot off Gore's pace at UTSA as he tied for 16th with rounds of 72-75. Gonzalez, a sophomore, and Gore both posted the exact same 73.91 scoring average last year and are the top-two returners to the Mavs' lineup in 2018-19. Each had eight par-or-better rounds in 2017-18, with Gore firing in the 60s on four occasions – including a career-low 67 – while Gonzalez recorded a pair of 69s as a freshman.
Â
Hicks and Cox both made their collegiate debuts earlier this month as true freshmen, and will be looking to grow from that experience this weekend. Hicks is a product of Lamar High School in Arlington. He earned individual qualification for the state 6A championships as a senior following a district championship performance as a sophomore and junior. Cox is a graduate of Creekview High School in Carrollton, where he was a four-time UIL Class 5A state championship qualifier. He tied for 8th overall at the 2018 state championships.
Â
Coastal Carolina is the only other Sun Belt Conference member in the field of 17 this weekend (listed at the end of this release). UTA finished in 11th place at the 63rd edition of the William H. Tucker last year with a three-round 901 total: 299-299-304.
Â
Following action in New Mexico, the Mavericks return to Texas for UNT's Maridoe Intercollegiate in Carrollton Oct. 6-8.
