Highly-Anticipated 2018-19 Season For UTA Men’s Golf Gets Underway Monday
9/8/2018 4:16:00 PM | Men's Golf
SAN ANTONIO – Coming off a 2nd-place finish in the Sun Belt Conference Championships last year, the UT Arlington men's golf team commences its much-anticipated 2018-19 season this coming Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 10-11, at UTSA's Lone Star Invitational from the TPC San Antonio AT&T Oaks Course.
Â
The Mavericks return two of their top-three performers from a season ago as they will tee off the 2018-19 slate with a shotgun start on Monday at 8 a.m. UTA, UTSA and the 13 other competing teams will play 36 continuous holes before concluding play with the final round on Tuesday with another shotgun start at 8 a.m.
Â
Live scoring will be available all tournament via Golfstat by clicking here or by visiting the link accompanying this release. Additionally, updates will be posted on the official Twitter account of the program @UTAMavsGolf.
Â
The Mavs' five-man lineup will feature the following quintet at the lengthy par-72, 7,435-yard layout which plays host to the PGA Tour's Valero Texas Open and was designed by Greg Norman with player consultant Sergio Garcia.
Â
1)Â Paul Gonzalez
2)Â Camilo Avila
3)Â Caleb Hicks
4)Â Tanner Gore
5)Â Kyle Cox
Â
Gonzalez and Gore both posted the exact same 73.91 scoring average last year and are the top-two returners to the Mavs' lineup in 2018-19. Each had eight par-or-better rounds in 2017-18, with Gore firing in the 60s on four occasions – including a career-low 67 – while Gonzalez recorded a pair of 69s as a freshman.
Â
Avila joins Gore as the club's only two seniors, and he will be playing out of the No. 2 position in the lineup. His best finish last year was a tie for 14th, and Avila will be looking to continue a steady progression over the first three seasons which has seen his finish percentage and scoring average lower each year.
Â
Hicks and Cox will both be teeing it up in their first collegiate action as true freshmen. Hicks is a product of Lamar High School in Arlington. He earned individual qualification for the state 6A championships as a senior following a district championship performance as a sophomore and junior. Cox is a graduate of Creekview High School in Carrollton, where he was a four-time UIL Class 5A state championship qualifier. He tied for 8th overall at the 2018 state championships.
Â
Seven of the 15 teams in the field finished last year ranked in the top 100 of the official Golfstat Rankings, and four more – including UTA – were right behind, ranked between 100 and 120, setting up for what should be a highly-competitive event featuring several in-state and Sun Belt foes.
Â
This is the 10th edition of the Lone Star Invitational; in 2010, UTA won the second-annual event with an 855 (-9) total. This past March (the event will be held twice in 2018), eventual NCAA quarterfinalist Oklahoma won the tournament with an 849 (-15) total, but that was held at Briggs Ranch Golf Club.
Â
Following action in San Antonio, the Mavericks continue their fall slate Sept. 28-29 at New Mexico's William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque.
