Mavericks to participate in the top meet in the country this weekend
LUBBOCK, Texas – The UTA men's and women's track and field teams hit the midpoint of their 2019 indoor season this weekend when the Mavericks compete at the Texas Tech Classic on Friday and Saturday at the Sports Performance Center.
Â
This weekend's meet features 11 top-25 teams between the men's and women's fields. In addition to UTA and Texas Tech, other schools with competitors include: Abilene Christian, Arizona, Arizona State, Baylor, Florida State, Miami (Fla.), NC State, North Texas, Northern Arizona, Oklahoma, TCU, Texas A&M, Tulane, USC and ULM.
Â
"This is the premier meet in the country this weekend, and we are happy to be part of it," UTA coach John Sauerhage said. "It's exciting to be going to Lubbock to see how we stack up against some of the best athletes in the entire country."
Â
The Mavericks, who have enjoyed two strong weeks to start the season, are bringing their top runners and jumpers to Lubbock. Included in that group are men's sprinter Deontre Haynes and women's jumper Juleen Lewis. Both team members are currently leading the Sun Belt Conference in two events. Only one other individual in the conference, Arkansas State women's sprinter Caitland Smith, is in that exclusive club.
Â
Haynes, who sits atop the leaderboard in both the 60 meters (6.76) and 200 meters (21.55), will be competing in both events this weekend. Meanwhile, Lewis has soared to the top of the SBC in the long jump (5.99m) and triple jump (12.29m), and will again participate in those disciplines at Texas Tech.
Â
Two other UTA men, Justin Domangue in the 3000 meters and Victor Fincher in the 60m hurdles, also lead the Sun Belt in their events. On the women's side, Alexus Henry is the leader in the high jump.
Â
On Friday, action begins at 3 p.m. with the first field event, while races on the track begin at 5 p.m. Saturday's field events start at 10 a.m., while running events commence at noon. Live results will be available on PTTiming.com.
