ARLINGTON, Texas – UTA secured a series sweep and its ninth consecutive win with a 9-5 win over Louisiana on Saturday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.
David Moffat (4-2) almost went the distance for the Mavs (28-13, 14-4 SBC), going eight innings in the win. He struck out two batters and only gave up four hits. The Ragin' Cajuns (20-23, 8-10) only scored in one of Moffat's innings.
Will Olson (3-for-4) started the second inning with his third home run of the season for the first run of the game.
After a single to open the top of the fourth, Todd Lott doubled to left center to drive in the Ragin' Cajuns' first run and tie the game at one
After a few quiet innings at the plate for the Mavs,
Anthony Dominguez got things rolling again with a hit to the gap in right center field that brought
Boone Montgomery home. In the next at-bat, Dominguez scored on an
Andrew Miller single to give UTA a 3-1 lead.
Coming out of the stretch, five of the first six UTA batters reached base in the bottom of the seventh inning. After
Aaron Funk singled
Josh Minjarez home,
Phillip Childs scored on a passed ball. Montgomery made it a five-run game on the next at-bat with a single down the left field line.
UTA added what would turn out to be three important insurance runs in the eighth inning. Olson, Funk and Childs all scored in the inning to make it 9-1 Mavs.
The Ragin' Cajuns made UTA work in the ninth, scoring four runs in the top of the frame before succumbed to the loss.
The Mavs will hit the road for a game at Texas A&M next Tuesday.
