ARLINGTON, Texas – UTA track student-athletes collected a pair of top accolades from the Sun Belt Conference Friday, as
Justin Domangue was named the Men's Most Outstanding Track Performer while
Vanessa Ugorji brought home Women's Freshman of the Year accolades. The Sun Belt Conference awards were voted on by the league's coaches.
"Justin and Vanessa were terrific last weekend," head coach
John Sauerhage said. "They are very deserving of their honors, and we know that their best races are still ahead of them."
Domangue grabbed the High Point Scorer award at last weekend's Sun Belt Conference Championships after totaling 20 points. The junior from Alvarado, Texas, had a second-place finish in the 3000-meter steeplechase as well as third-place showings in the 5000 meters and 10,000 meters. He was the only male athlete to grab podium finishes in three different individual events.
His 3000m time of 8:57.39 ranks as the second-fastest in Sun Belt Conference meet history. Meanwhile, he ran a 14:39.82 in the 5000 meters and a 29:42.00 in the 10,000 meters.
Ugorji was the runner up in the 400 meters with a school-record time of 54.01. She had previously tied the UTA record Saturday in the prelims with a clocking of 54.04. Ugorji scored points for the Mavericks in the 200 meters as well. The Houston, Texas, product ran a time of 24.21 in the finals of that event to finish fourth. In the prelims, she posted a season-best time of 24.03.
In all, she scored 13 points in the two events. She also ran on the 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams.
