CONWAY, S.C. – Three players scored in double-figures as UTA fell at Coastal Carolina on Saturday afternoon at the HTC Center.
With the loss, the Lady Mavs drop to 9-7 overall and 3-1 in the league, while the Chanticleers improve to 13-2 on the season and 3-1 in the SBC. UTA, Coastal Carolina, Troy, Louisiana, Little Rock and Arkansas State are now all tied at the top of the Sun Belt standings.
UTA shot just 37.7 percent (23-of-61) on the afternoon, while Coastal Carolina also shot below 40 percent on the afternoon (39.2 percent; 20-of-51). Both squads grabbed 37 boards, but the Chants were awarded 23 free-throws, while UTA shot just eight.
Marie Benson scored 12 points, snagged seven boards and recorded a game-high three steals, while
Claire Chastain added 12 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Aysia Evans also chipped in with 12 points and five rebounds, while
Misty Dossey recorded seven points and six boards.
Terryn Milton finished with seven points and three assists and
Katie Ferrell registered six points and six rebounds.
After some back-and-forth action in the first and second quarters, Coastal finished the first half with an 8-2 run to take a slim 31-29 lead into the locker room at the intermission. M. Benson led the Lady Mavs with 10 points in the opening 20 minutes.
The Chanticleers would lead the rest of the way, pushing their lead to as many as 11 points (55-44), and held off a UTA rally in the second half to pick up the win. The Lady Mavs got within three points (57-54), thanks to a 10-2 run, but would not get any closer.
UTA will be back in action on Thursday afternoon (Jan. 16) when they host Louisiana at College Park Center for Kids Day. Tip-off is schedules for 11:30 a.m.
