ARLINGTON, Texas – Four players scored in double figures as the UTA women's basketball team led wire-to-wire and defeated in-state rival Texas State, 69-49, on Saturday night at College Park Center.
With the win, the Lady Mavs improve to 16-10 on the season and 10-4 in conference, while the Bobcats fall to 10-15 overall and 3-11 in league play.
Marie Benson shot 8-of-14 from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe to finish with her game-high 20 points. The senior's 15 boards, also a game-high, mark the eighth time she has pulled down double digit rebounds and gives the Waco native eight double-doubles on the season.
Claire Chastain added 15 points, four rebounds and three assists, while
Terryn Milton chipped in with 13 points and five assists.
Misty Dossey finished with 10 points, two boards and a pair of blocks in 18 minutes off the bench.
The Lady Mavs shot 40+ percent from the field for the fourth time in the last five outings. UTA knocked down 49.2 percent (29-of-59) of their shots from the field on the evening. The Lady Mavericks also shared the ball in the win, registering 21 assists on 29 made baskets.
UTA outrebounded the visitors 45-29 and held Texas State to just 30.4 percent (17-of-56) shooting from the field. The Lady Mavs have now held opponents below 65 points 18 times this season, while also holding this year's opposition below 55 points or fewer on 12 occasions.
The Lady Mavericks opened the game with a 10-0 run and never looked back. UTA shot 69.2% and took 13-point lead (18-5) after the opening frame. The Lady Mavs held the Bobcats without a point for the first 6:44 of the quarter and held TXST to just 13.3% shooting in the period.
UTA led by 11 points (29-18) at the intermission and continued to make it tough for the visitors in the second half. The Lady Mavs held Texas State to 37.0% shooting in the second half and outscored the Bobcats 40-31. UTA's lead increased to as many as 23 points and the Lady Mavs avenged their Feb. 1 loss in San Marcos as they cruised to the 69-49 victory.
The Lady Mavericks will be back in action on Thursday night (Feb. 27), when they host Georgia State (8-18, 5-10 SBC) at College Park Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
