Softball Travels to Sam Houston For Midweek Clash

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The UT Arlington softball team (7-20) will travel to Huntsville for a midweek clash against Sam Houston with the first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

UTA NOTES
  • The Mavericks are coming off a 3-2 weekend in the Bevo Classic in Austin where UTA topped South Dakota twice, UTSA once and nearly took one from No. 10 Texas.
  • UTA came up just short 2-1 to Texas in game 1 and dropped game 2 with a final score of 9-1.
  • Third baseman KJ Murphy leads the team with a .363 average with 8 doubles, 2 home runs, 13 RBI – tied with Aileen Garcia – and 11 walks.
  • The senior batted .421 last week with 4 RBI and was responsible for the tying run against Texas in game 1.
  • Shortstop Emily Evans is coming off a hot week at the plate where she went 6-14 (.429) with 2 RBI and a .500 slugging percentage.
  • Second baseman Jessica Carreon follows Murphy with a .311 batting average with a current on-base percentage of .408.
  • Left- handed pitcher Jojo Valencia finished the week with a .68 ERA and made an appearance in game 1 against the Longhorns then went on to retire 10 out of 14 batters she faced during her outing.
  • The senior also tossed a complete game over the weekend in game 2 versus South Dakota and limited the Coyotes to just two hits, retired 21 batters and recorded 3 strike outs.
  • Junior Laura Henriksen ended the week with a 1.68 ERA over 8.1 innings pitched where the California native started on the mound in game 1 against Texas then went on to keep the Longhorns to just one run.
 
KNOW TOUR OPPPONENT – Sam Houston (7-17)
  • The Bearkats are coming off an 0-3 weekend to Central Arkansas in part of Southland Conference play.
  • Freshman infielder/outfielder Ellie Grill leads Sam Houston with a .339 batting average and 11 RBI.
  • Grill is 6-6 in stolen bases attempts and has a .382 on-base percentage.
  • Senior infielder Brooke Malia follows Grill with a .269 average at the plate and has 7 RBI on the season with a .333 on-base percentage.
  • Sam Houston's ace Mika Vento (3-3) leads the pitching rotation with 50.2 innings pitched, 35 strike outs and a 3.73 ERA.
  • Sophomore pitcher Regan Dunn (4-4) has thrown 41.2 innings this season with 30 strike outs.

The Mavericks will continue Sun Belt Conference play and travel to Monroe, Louisiana to face ULM with a doubleheader beginning Friday (Apr. 2) at 1:00 p.m. and will wrap up the series on Saturday (Apr. 3) at 12:00 p.m.
